Description

This is a lineart of how I perceive one of my close friends, ~ShadowchildofChaos.

This character is a fallen angel who stands on the thin line between peace and chaos. As such, his powers are sealed by the markings on his arms (only shown on the left in the picture), and only has one withered wing.

Currently, I'm coloring the picture with Photoshop CS2, but is proving to be a headache for me. Will someone teach me how to make the lineart on a transparent layer?

Heh, having issues with using CS2? =P

Anyhow, there's a couple different ways to separate scanned lineart and make coloring easier.

1) Lazy man's out - Make a new group/layer/whathaveyou above your lineart and call it "Color". Change the layer setting to Multiply. Color away.

2) Fun with Tablets - Change the opacity of your scanned lineart (and change the color balance too if you want, sometimes changing it to blue will make life easier). Create a new layer/group/whatever above and call it "lineart". Re-draw (essentially "ink") your pencils.

3) More difficult and ends up with less appealing lineart, but if none of the above strike your fancy, then...

Change your color to white. Click on...err, I think it's Layers > Selected Color... or something like that. Adjust the options 'til you're happy with 'em and then click ok. If you've done it right, then it'll select all areas that are white (or close to white). Hit delete. Now create your color layer/group underneath this lineart layer. Color away.

Or you could also do this, and then still do the multiply method (#1). Sometimes that makes for a cleaner image. Sometimes not. But either way, generally the lineart will come out best if you just digitally ink it (using brush, pen, whatever you desire).

Or, y'know, to avoid this problem altogether....just do your lineart digitally too. =P
